Wildflowers / Back of the Dam

back of the dam wildflowers

Welcome to the back of our dam!  The pond on our property was built by damming up an old stream.  The result is we have a nice little dam that runs down into our wooded area.  Someday, we’d like to add some dam wildflowers and maybe some dam bees.  Then we can really have a dam good time.

What can you do with the back of a dam?

My parents went to a dam seminar last year and learned some dam safety.  We know that it’s not good to let anything with deep roots grow on the back of your dam because the roots can damage its structural integrity.

However, we had someone from the Missouri Department of Conservation come out for a site visit this past year and he said it was safe to plant wildflowers on the back of the dam.  That would be beneficial for our pollinators, add a little color, and save us from so much dam mowing.  Hot dam!

Our Dam Plan:

The spot on this map that says “wildflowers” is the back of the dam.

Here are some of our plans for this space:

  • Removal of smaller brush/trees that are trying to grow along the edge of the pond on that side
  • Planting wildflowers along the back of the dam
